There are several things you should consider when maintaining (performing routine services) your car, and some can drastically affect your safety while driving.
- Is your windscreen in proper working order? Cracks or chips can grow to become large cracks across your field of view. A windscreen specialist can repair small chips and cracks and prevent you from having to purchase an entire replacement windscreen.
- Your tyres should have the correct air pressure. Check them at least once every two weeks with a good quality gauge.
- The engine oil can be thought of as your car’s “life-blood,” especially since a low level could mean the end of your engine. Have the oil and filter changed at regular service intervals and make note of any leakage or excess oil usage that occurs.
- The wiper blades will wear down over time and will sometimes crack or tear. Replace wiper blades at least once each year to ensure proper windscreen clearance.
- Check the level of windscreen washer fluid whenever you check your oil level. Don’t find yourself on the road without the ability to clear insect or dirt debris from your windscreen. There is a legal requirement in most areas to have a functioning screenwash system.
- The coolant level should be checked several times each year. Make sure the engine is cool before opening the coolant reservoir and have a qualified mechanic check the antifreeze concentration.
- A toolkit is an essential addition to any car. If your car does not come with one at the time of purchase, spend a little extra to get one. This toolkit should contain at least a jack and the tools necessary for wheel removal. Many kits will also have reflective triangles and first-aid kits in the event they are needed.
- You need to be able to see as well as be seen at night and during inclement weather. Check all lights at least weekly, including all indicators, brake, and fog lamps. Make certain they are clean and free of debris.
- Power steering is available in most cars and should be checked occasionally for leaks and fluid level amounts. Use only the correct fluid as required by your car owner’s manual.
- Inspect the body of the car and deal with any damage promptly to decrease the risk of rust occurring. Paint touch-up kits and body repair kits are available at automotive parts retailers.
